Death of a pregnant woman by slipping her leg in her womb: 20 years imprisonment

Strict abortion laws in El Salvador

Garcia, who was released from prison after 9 years, started a campaign to relax the abortion law

San Salvador: El Salvador has strict laws on abortion. Because of this, even if a woman has an abortion by accident, she has to suffer the punishment. There is a demand to relax the law.

In El Salvador, a 20-year-old pregnant woman named Sara Rogel Garcia slipped on her leg. The baby died in her womb in that accident. The woman was treated at the hospital and realized she was immediately rushed to jail.

The woman was tried and sentenced to 20 years in prison because of abortion laws in El Salvador. Abortion is prosecuted as murder. However, the woman was released after 9 years in prison.

The girl, who was convicted in 2012, has now campaigned for the relaxation of abortion laws after her release from jail. Members of the Women's Rights Group have demanded that the government relax the abortion law.

These women argued that many innocent women also have to suffer because of the extremely strict laws. Many women suffer because the law does not allow for abortion after an accident.

Sara said many pregnant women do not even have access to a doctor because of strict laws. Doctors do not handle cases of critical delivery. Not only that, even if an abortion is due to an accident, it is not allowed in court. Many women are imprisoned because of it.
