The World Health Organization (WHO) chief scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan was given a reassuring news on Thursday. According to him, the final stage data of Bharat Biotech vaccine 'Covexin' is good. This greatly increases the likelihood that the vaccine will be approved.

The overall efficacy of the vaccine is effective against several variants, he said. Although its effectiveness against the Delta variant is less than expected, it is nonetheless good. In addition, the safety profile of covexin meets WU standards, he said.

According to Swaminathan, they are keeping a close eye on all the vaccines that have been included in the list of emergency uses. They are trying to collect maximum data. "Apart from the US, there has been an increase in corona cases in most parts of the world and there has been no reduction in the death toll," Swaminathan said. Swaminathan has suggested primary vaccination to at least 60-70 per cent of the population in India.

He said India could learn from countries like Britain which are planning booster shots. However Wu would not recommend a booster dose so soon.
