Pune, 26 July 2021 Monday

A young man from a Scheduled Caste working in a bakery in Pune, Maharashtra, has converted to Hinduism the next day after a season of conversions. The villagers greeted the young man on his way back home with a drum beat. The youth admitted to converting to avoid financial hardship.

David Kumar, a resident of Sedoberkhan village near Pune, Maharashtra, started working in a bakery in Pune last year after the death of his father, along with other youths.

When David Kumar went to his village last week to attend his sister's wedding, villagers learned of his conversion. The relatives were amazed to see David's long beard and his mannerisms according to Islamic custom. When questioned by relatives, David admitted that he had converted to Islam in Pune and said that now the financial condition of the family would be much better.

Following the insistence of relatives, Hindu organizations tried to persuade the young man who became Bilal from David. Hindu youth demanded legal action against those who converted for the sake of money. The villagers, and relatives, played drums and took David home. David's rites of purification are still pending, according to Hinduism.
