33 children are born every minute in India, control law required: Giriraj

Consideration to bring law in Karnataka after Assam, Uttar Pradesh

Nitish Kumar backs population control law: Rakesh Sinha: NDA allies unhappy in Bihar

New Delhi: Union Minister Giriraj Singh has claimed that 33 children are being born in a minute in the country. It requires legislation to curb population growth. "Overcoming population growth has nothing to do with religion or politics," he said during a program. The matter is linked to development.

Apart from Uttar Pradesh and Assam, other states have also witnessed a heated political climate over population control. In Karnataka, BJP leader CT Ravi said that like Uttar Pradesh and Assam, Karnataka also needs a policy to curb population growth.

The demand comes at a time when the government is also introducing policies in two other BJP-ruled states of Assam and Uttar Pradesh. NDA allies do not agree that a similar debate is taking place in Bihar.

BJP national secretary CT Ravi said it was necessary to formulate a population control policy in Karnataka while law minister Basavaraj Bommai said a decision on population control would be taken after discussion. As a result, the debate on controlling population growth in the BJP-ruled states has gained momentum.

Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, BJP MP Rakesh Sinha said that even Nitish Kumar should understand that there has been a debate over the years to curb population growth. However, no specific solution has been reached yet. It is therefore necessary that legislation be enacted for population control.
