Water released by Nepal, many villages in UP-Bihar submerged, red alert issued


- All 36 gates of barrage constructed on Gandak river for irrigation in Balmiki Nagar had to be opened

Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in many parts of UP-Bihar on Friday, with the government issuing red alerts to several districts. The monsoon rains at Maharajganj in UP for the last 3 days have started flooding the district. In the midst of all this, Nepal on Wednesday discharged 4 lakh 12 thousand cusecs of water into the big Gandak river so that all the 36 gates of the barrage built on the Gandak river for irrigation in Balmiki Nagar had to be opened.

The Gandak river is rapidly moving towards the danger mark in view of which the Irrigation Department has issued a high alert to the flood department. The Rohini River, which flows through Nepal, also crossed the danger mark on Wednesday. The Sandalwood River, the Beas River and the mountain channel Mahav are also flowing above the danger level. Due to floods in Mahav and Zarhi rivers, embankments have broken in 4-4 places. It has flooded many villages in the Indian border town of Thuthibari and Bargadwa. The access road to Khairhawa village has been cut off due to floods.

The Gandak River, which originates from Dhaulagiri in Tibet, flows from Triveni in Nepal to Bihar after entering Maharajganj in UP on the Indian border. The river has a danger mark of 365.30 feet. The water level of Moti Gandak was recorded at 360.60 feet on Wednesday. The Rapti River is also about 2 meters below the danger mark. The Rapti River had a water gauge of 78.30 meters on the Belsad-Rigauli dam on Wednesday. The danger level is 80.30 meters.
