Rs. The Supreme Court closed the case of two Italian Navy soldiers after a compensation of Rs 10 crore was collected

The Supreme Court has stayed the ongoing criminal case in India against two Italian navy soldiers accused of killing two Kerala fishermen off the coast of Kerala in February 2021. The two Italian navy soldiers were accused of killing two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kerala in 2012.

The apex court had ordered a deposit of Rs 10 crore in the case. The case has been closed after Italy deposited Rs 10 crore. The Supreme Court has closed the case after the compensation amount was deposited. A bench comprising Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice MR Shah dismissed the FIR and proceedings against two Italian navy personnel in the case.

The bench said that further investigation into the murder of two Kerala fishermen would now be conducted in Italy as per the International Arbitral Award accepted by India. The court further said that Rs 10 crore has been paid by Italy as compensation which is sufficient.

The apex court further said that out of Rs 10 crore, Rs 2-3 crore would be given to the families of the deceased and Rs 2 crore to the boat owners. Rs 10 crore deposited in the Supreme Court registry will be deposited in the Kerala High Court. The Kerala High Court will make two fixed deposits of Rs 2-3 crore in the name of the families of the deceased.

The bench further said that the family of the deceased would be able to withdraw the amount of interest during the fixed deposit period. It is worth mentioning that in February 2016, two soldiers of the Italian navy aboard an Italian oil tanker aaaa
