Rishi Sunak also embroiled in Narayan Murthy-Amazon joint venture tax dispute in Britain

Sunak's office was forced to issue a statement

The tax department has demanded 55 5.5 million from Murthy's company and Amazon's joint online retail company.

LONDON: The British tax department has demanded 55 5.5 million, including interest and fines, from Infosys co-founder NR Narayanamurthy's company and Amazon.com's joint online retailer CloudTel India Pvt Ltd. Media reports in the case have forced the office of British Finance Minister Rishi Sunak to issue a statement. It may be mentioned that Rishi Sanak is the son-in-law of Narayanamurthy.

According to media reports, Amazon allegedly developed independent vendors such as CloudTail as special merchants. By 2019, it accounted for 35 percent of total sales.

Narayan Murthy's company Katamaran Ventures has a 76 per cent stake in CloudTel while Amazon has a 24 per cent stake. Amazon holds two key positions, such as chief executive and finance director. Cloudtel's holding company, Prayoni, is also managed by a former Amazon manager. The report said it was not immediately clear which case the tax dispute involved.

The company has said it will oppose the 55 5.5 million demanded by the income tax department. However, as the case is pending in the court, it is not possible to comment further. Just a few days ago, the finance ministers of the G-7 developed countries, led by Sunak, agreed that tech companies should pay more taxes.
