The Defense Ministry on Friday took an important decision to increase the strength of the Indian Navy. The Ministry of Defense has approved the construction of 6 submarines under Project 75-India. The project was stalled for a long time and will now be completed.

The Rs 50,000 crore project was approved at a meeting chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. The project has been handed over to indigenous company Mazgaon Docks Limited and L&T. For this project both the companies together with one of the foreign shipyards will hand over the information of the whole project and place bids.

What is Project 75-I?

The Indian Navy has launched this project to increase its power in the maritime areas. Under it 6 huge submarines will be built which will be diesel-electric based. Its size will be 50 percent larger than the current Scorpion class submarine. It wants heavy duty firepower in the demand for submarines by the Indian Navy. In addition to anti-ship cruise missiles, 12 Land Attack cruise missiles can also be deployed.

Apart from that the Navy wants the ability to carry 18 heavyweight torpedoes in submarines. The Indian Navy has about 140 submarines and surface warships while compared to the Pakistan Navy they have only 20. But India is facing not only Pakistan but also China which is constantly trying to increase its power in the Indian Ocean. This is why India has focused on the seas from the Arabian Sea to Sri Lanka.
