Indian Railways will be the largest green railway in the world

New Delhi, 4 June 2021 Friday

Indian Railways is on the verge of becoming the largest green railway in the world. It will become a 'net zero carbon emitter' before 2030 without emitting even the slightest amount of carbon.

On the eve of World Environment Day, the railways said that the electrification work of the railways, which protects the environment by reducing pollution, has increased almost ten times since 2014.

The railways wants to electrify the remaining broad gauge routes by December 2013, keeping in view the economic benefits of electric traction. The trains will be made more environmentally friendly by using head-on-generation system, bio-toilets and LED lights. At the same time, tourists will get the benefit of comfortable travel.

Railways is converting its dedicated freight corridor into a low carbon green transportation network using more energy efficient and carbon-friendly technology.

Railways signed a memorandum of understanding with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in July 2016 to cover 39 workshops, 7 production units, 8 loco sheds and one store-depot in the green initiative program.

In the last two years, more than 600 railway stations in the country have certified the above stations for the implementation of the Environmental Management System to achieve ISO: 14001. A total of 718 stations are covered in the above certification.
