Following the court order, three activist students were immediately released from jail

A Delhi court on Thursday ordered the immediate release of three activist students arrested in connection with a 'conspiracy' of riots in north-east Delhi. As a result the students were released on Thursday evening. These students have been kept in jail for two days even after their bail was granted due to delay in the identification process. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has challenged the High Court's bail order in the case in the Supreme Court.

The Delhi High Court had granted bail to Dewang's Kalita, Natasha Narwal and Asif Iqbal Tanha in the case. The trio were arrested last year under the Unlawful Activity (Detention) Act (UAPA). Criticizing the police for the delay in verifying the addresses and security of the three students, Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Bedi said there was no rational reason to keep the accused in jail till such a report is filed.

Noting that his client had been assured by the council that he would not leave the national capital, the court issued a warrant to the superintendent of police of Tihar Jail and the superintendent of police of Tihar Jail to release him immediately. Before releasing the accused on bail on June 14, Delhi Police had asked for some time to check the authenticity and address of the Aadhaar cards. However, the court rejected the police's plea and directed them to file a report by 5.00 pm on Thursday.
