Follow the rules or be prepared for action, last notice sent by the Government of India to Twitter

New Delhi, June 5, 2021, Saturday

The rift between the Indian government and Twitter has escalated. The Indian government has now sent a final notice to Twitter urging it to abide by the law.

The central government has told Twitter that if Twitter does not comply with government rules, it will face major action. The notice cites notices sent earlier by the government on May 26 and May 28 and Twitter's response on May 28 and June 2. The government has said that it is not satisfied with Twitter's response and after reading this response, it seems that Twitter is not ready to abide by all the rules of the government. Twitter has not yet announced compliance with the rules. The employees appointed by the company for redressal of grievances as well as nodal officers are not Twitter employees working in India. Twitter's India address is also from a law firm. Which is not appropriate as a rule.

The government said the rules on social media came into force on May 26. It's been a week but Twitter is refusing to accept the rules. Needless to say, the consequences of not following the rules will be unpredictable. Twitter's policy of non-compliance with the rules shows that Twitter does not want to provide a safe experience for the people of India on its platform. India was the first country in the world to make an entry on Twitter.

Despite being in operation in India for over a decade, Twitter has not been able to create a mechanism in which the grievances of the Indian people can be resolved through Indian resources. The people of India are demanding an impartial mechanism to resolve their grievances. And the law that compels the company to do this is made by the people of India.

The government has also said that if the rules are not followed by Twitter, it could be prosecuted under the IT Act and other laws.
