Delta variant 60% more contagious, less effective vaccine, British researchers claim

New Delhi, 12 June 2021 Friday

According to a new study, the rapid increase in cases during Delhi's fourth Covid-19 wave is mainly attributed to the Delta variant, which has immune-stealing properties. Of all the cases registered in Delhi, the Delta variant was responsible for 60 per cent. Researchers at the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the CSIR Institute of Genomics say the delta variant, B.1.617.2, spreads 50 percent faster than the first alpha variant, B1,117, first found in Britain.

The Delta variant gained momentum for a variety of reasons

Scientists found that earlier infection, high susceptibility and partial vaccination proved insufficient to prevent the Delta variant, factors contributing to the scale and speed of the fourth wave that started in Delhi in April were compared and compared with the previous three waves. It has been found that SARS-CoV-2 infection in Delhi can be explained by the introduction of a potentially immunosuppressive property of a new highly impermeable variant (VOC) B.1.617.2.
