Big hit to Twitter, Complaints officer resigns, appointed just days ago

New Delhi, 27 June 2021 Sunday

Twitter's interim resident grievance officer for India has left the microblogging site without informing Twitter. The officer was appointed a few days ago as a grievance officer. The source said that Dharmendra Chatur, who was recently appointed as the interim resident grievance officer for India through Twitter, has resigned from the post.

His name is no longer displayed on the social media company's website, as required under the Information Technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rule 2021. However, no statement has yet been made on the matter via Twitter. This comes at a time when the micro-blogging platform is at loggerheads with the Indian government over new rules for social media. The government has criticized Twitter for its deliberate disregard and failure to comply with the country's new IT rules.

The new rules, which came into force on May 25, force social media companies to set up grievance redressal mechanisms to address complaints from users or victims. All the major social media companies with a user base of over 5 million will appoint an official to handle such complaints and share the names and contact details of such officials.
