4.2 magnitude earthquake shakes Assam: fifth tremor in northeast


Guwahati: A magnitude 4.2 earthquake shook Assam early Saturday morning. This was the fifth tremor in the last 24 hours in this part of Northeast India.

The last quake in this part of the country was recorded late Friday night at 1.07 pm, according to a report by the National Center for Seismology. Its epicenter was at a depth of 30 km at Tezpur, the district headquarters of Sonitpur.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or severe damage. A magnitude 4.1 earthquake also shook Assam early Friday morning with its epicenter in Sonitpur district. Another tremor was also felt here.

The epicenter was reported below the epicenter in Manipur's Chandel district. Another 2.6 magnitude earthquake with epicenter was felt in the western Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. That is why there are frequent earthquakes here. Earlier, on April 28, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook Assam.
