'Yas' could turn into hurricane today, Odisha warns several districts

After the devastation of Toukte hurricane, now there is a danger of hurricane named 'Yas'. As part of the precautionary measures, several states have started taking precautionary measures. It may be mentioned that the hurricane Toukte had caused severe damage in Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The Indian Meteorological Department had on May 26 forecast that Yas storm would pass over the coast of Odisha-West Bengal. Due to this, the Odisha government has issued alerts in 14 out of 30 districts. The state government on Friday also urged the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard to be ready to deal with the situation.

According to the meteorological department, a low pressure area will form on the eastern central part of the Bay of Bengal on May 22 which could turn into a cyclonic storm and hit the coast of Odisha-West Bengal on May 26.

Odisha Chief Secretary SC Mohapatra said after a meeting with senior officials that the state government is gearing up to face any situation if the Yas hurricane has any impact on the state.

The central government has asked Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to ensure stockpiling of essential medicines and resources at health centers to deal with emergencies during Hurricane Yas.

The hurricane will affect Odisha and West Bengal, as well as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the eastern coastal districts. In addition, flood conditions can also occur.
