India has welcomed the initiative of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to stop the violence in Myanmar and urge all parties to exercise restraint. India has once again demanded the release of leaders detained in Myanmar.

The ASEAN five-point consensus calls for immediate control of violence in Myanmar and for all forces to exercise restraint. A constructive dialogue between all parties concerned will begin the search for a peaceful settlement in the interest of the people. India's stance was challenged at the UN Security Council meeting on Myanmar on Friday.

TS Thirumurthy, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, tweeted after the conference meeting. "India welcomes the ASEAN initiative and the 5-point consensus," he wrote. India will strengthen ASEAN's efforts and the Security Council and the United Nations should support their efforts. India will continue to push for the release of detained leaders and an end to violence. New Delhi's stance on the situation is consistently consistent.
