Plasma therapy is not proving effective in saving the lives of corona infected patients. Despite its use, the deaths of infected people and the severity of their illness cannot be reduced. In these circumstances it will soon be removed from the Medical Management Guidelines (CMG).

At a meeting of the Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR) and the National Task Force on Covid-19 on Friday, all members agreed to remove plasma therapy from the CMG.

Risk of developing a toxic form of the virus

Experts and scientists recently wrote a letter to Chief Scientific Adviser K Vijay Raghavan calling plasma therapy in the treatment of corona unscientific. Copies of the letter were also sent to ICMR President Balram Bhargava and AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria.

Experts say it could increase rather than decrease the risk of an epidemic, as it risks developing a more toxic form of the virus.

In plasma therapy, antibodies present in the blood of patients who have recovered from covid are given to critically ill patients. Experts said that after testing 11,588 patients, it showed no change in the number of deaths and discharge from the hospital.
