Himant Biswa Sarma was on Monday sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Assam. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is in power for the second time in a row in Assam, has changed its chief minister and replaced Himachal Biswa Sarma with Sarvanand Sonowal. The first cabinet meeting of the new government is scheduled for Tuesday.

However, Himant Biswa Sarma made a big announcement just after taking oath on Monday. Himant Sarma said his government would fulfill all the promises made in the elections, including bringing in a law against love jihad-land jihad.

After taking oath, Himant Biswa also made an important statement on the NRC issue. He said his government was in favor of re-verification of 20 per cent in border districts and 10 per cent in other districts and would demand it.

In the case of the Corona crisis in Assam, he said, the situation was deteriorating and the number of new cases reached 5,000 daily. The Covid crisis issue will be discussed in the first cabinet.

Notably, the CAA, NRC became a major issue in the Assam elections, on the one hand the BJP talked of expelling the infiltrators while the Congress announced that the CAA would not be implemented if their government was formed. However, once again the BJP government has been formed in Assam.

In Assam, a week after the election results were declared, the BJP was vying for the chief ministership. But on Sunday, the seal of approval was stamped on the name of Himant Biswa Sarma. He was also sworn in with his cabinet on Monday. Bharatiya Janata Party president JP Nadda himself was present to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
