Dehradun, May 21, 2021, Friday

The pioneer of the Chipko movement, the environmentalist self, fought a long battle to save the natural environment of the Himalayan forest region. He was the pioneer of the world famous Chipko movement which started from Reni village in Uttarakhand in the 80's. This was a spontaneous and decentralized movement in which women played a leading role. The emotional behavior of sticking to a tree when the Kathiyaras came to cut it down was at the base of the movement, hence the movement to stop cutting down trees became known as Chipko. Sundarlal Bahuguna's name with Chipko is Amit. In the 19th, the Chipko movement received the Right Lively Hood Award, which is very prestigious in the field of environment and forest conservation.

Sunderlal Bahuguna was born on December 6, 19 in a village near Tehri. He was advocating for the environment of the Himalayas and the rights of the people living in the jungles, hence he was hailed as the guardian of the Himalayas. 6-year-old Sundarlal Bahuguna was admitted to AIIMS in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand on May 7 for treatment of corona. Many environmentalists and fans mourned his death during treatment this morning.

Between 191 and 1918, Sunderlal made a 4,000 km long trek through the Himalayan region to make the protection of trees and the environment a common issue. It was only as a result of Sunderlal Bahuguna's efforts that the government passed a law to save some of the forests in the Himalayan region. Sundarlal had a meeting with the then very popular Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on the issue of environment. Sunderlal also raised public awareness against the Tehri Dam. He was also a pioneer in the movement to save rivers from extinction in India. He always advocated for the rights of the exploited, the deprived and women. Gandhian Sundarlal created a tradition of non-violent and peaceful movement for the protection of the environment.
