A glacier erupted late Friday night in the Niti valley at Joshimath on the Indo-China border in Uttarakhand. The army then took over the front and conducted a rescue operation. News has surfaced that 8 people have been killed in the tragedy. In addition, 300 people have been rescued from a Border Road Organization camp working on road construction in the area.

The Chief Minister of the province Tirath Singh Rawat has issued an alert regarding the tragedy. It is learned that due to bad weather at Joshimath, any campaign is being delayed. According to an Army report, the BRO camp was located near the road where the accident took place. Apart from that, an army camp was 3 km away from BRO's camp at Sumna. The place where the accident took place has been experiencing heavy rains and snowfall for the last 5 days.

NTPC and other projects have been ordered to stop work at night to prevent any untoward incident. The Rishiganga valley was suddenly flooded in February when a part of the Nandadevi Glacier at Chamoli in Uttarakhand collapsed. More than 2 dozen people were killed in that tragedy.
