Supreme Court seeks reply from Center on petition challenging treason law

The apex court on Friday sought a reply from the Center on a petition challenging the constitutional validity of the sedition law. A bench of Justice Yu Yu Lalit, Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice KM Joseph sought a reply from the Center challenging the IPC.

A bench of Justice U U Lalit, Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice KM Joseph was hearing an application challenging Section 124-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, under which a person is convicted of treason.

In a petition filed by Manipur-based journalist Kishore Chandra Wangkhemcha and Chhattisgarh-based journalist Kanhaiyalal Shukla, the apex court has been asked to declare Article 24-A unconstitutional.

The petition claims that Article 124-A violates the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression granted under Article 19 (A) of the Constitution.

The petitioners claimed that they were questioning their respective state governments and the central government and an FIR has been registered against them under section 124-A for sharing their comments and cartoons on social media platform Facebook, alleging abuse of the law by the petitioners.
