The CBI has registered an FIR against former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh. Apart from Deshmukh, a case has been registered against some other unidentified persons on the charges of former CP Paramvir Singh. The CBI has also launched investigations in several places, including Deshmukh's residence, where the CBI is conducting searches.

Anil Deshmukh had to resign following allegations by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Paramvir Singh. Paramvir Singh had written a letter accusing Anil Deshmukh of extorting Rs 100 crore. In a letter to the Chief Minister, Paramvir Singh alleged that Anil Deshmukh was meeting Sachin Waje at his residence. At the same time, he talked of collecting Rs 100 crore from Mumbai every month.

Paramvir Singh had knocked on the door of the High Court in this case. The High Court had then directed the CBI to probe Paramvir's allegations. The court said it would decide whether an FIR would be registered against Anil Deshmukh after the CBI submits its report within 15 days.

After Paramvir Singh's letter, there was a political earthquake in Maharashtra and Anil Deshmukh was targeted by the Opposition. Initially, NCP president Sharad Pawar defended Deshmukh and refused his resignation. He termed the allegations against Deshmukh as politically motivated. However, Deshmukh had to resign after the controversy erupted.
