An uprising against China has begun in Sri Lanka. Dozens of petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against the creation of a port city by China in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo. Sri Lankan opposition forces, civil society and labor unions have reached out to the court to challenge the China-backed project. The case is set to be heard in court on Monday.

In fact, the Sri Lankan government introduced a bill in Parliament last week called the Colombo Port City Economic Commission. It proposes to build a પો 1.4 billion "port city" off the coast of Colombo. Sri Lanka's opposition United People's Front (SJB), Janata Vimukti Permuna (JVP), United National Party (UNP), Colombo's NGO Center for Policy Alternatives and labor unions have questioned Port City's constitutional validity. However, the Sri Lankan government is considering it as a means of foreign investment.

Port City is an ambitious project of Chinese President Xi Jinping. The project was announced in September 2014 during Jinping's visit to Sri Lanka. Mahinda Rajapaksa was the President of Sri Lanka at that time. However, shortly after the announcement, Maitripal became Sirisa's president. When Rajapaksa came to power again, he promised to start work on the project. According to the Rajapaksa administration, the project will bring in રોકાણ 15 billion in foreign investment to Sri Lanka.
