Whatever the people of Bengal believed in, they did with an open heart. Whoever was given power, for a very long time. The political mood in Bengal has been very stable. That is why the Left has completed 34 years and now the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has completed 10 years in power. Given Bengal's electoral past, the TMC's claim of a hat-trick of victories is not unreasonable. But for the ruling party, on the other hand, the road to elections is not looking easy.

This time the picture is very different from the 2016 assembly elections. This time, TMC president Mamata Banerjee is in a dilemma. They also have an estimate of the seriousness of the situation. That is why, a day before the second phase of polls, he wrote a letter to 15 leaders urging them to unite against the BJP.

In the last assembly elections in Bengal, the TMC was challenged by the Left and the Congress. The cadre of the Left was scattered. With the exception of a few areas, the Left did not even count in the fight. According to experts, the election was held in a state of zero opposition. There was no challenge against TMC and Mamata Banerjee's victory chariot reached Kolkata without any hindrance and Mamata Banerjee became the Chief Minister for the second time in a row. The TMC won 211 seats in the 294-member assembly.

However, the picture this time is very different. The BJP, which won only three assembly seats in the 2016 elections, is facing Mamata Banerjee's party this time. The BJP, which won just one seat in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, won two seats in 2014 and 18 seats out of 40 in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, signaling its readiness to fill the vacancy left by the weakening of the Left-Congress in Bengal politics.

The flight of leaders

The biggest headache for Mamata Banerjee and her party is that leaders are fleeing the party. Leaders who have been very personal to Mamata have taken up the BJP flag. Shubhendu, who has been Mamata's special, is in front of him at the Nandigram seat this time. Even senior leaders like Mukul Roy and Dinesh Trivedi have left him. At a rally in Medinipur, Home Minister Amit Shah also said that Mamata Banerjee would be left alone till the elections. Mamata Banerjee has shouldered the responsibility of campaigning while the BJP has in a way brought down the entire central government.
