Chhattisgarh Bijapur attack kills 22, Naxals loot weapons of 2 dozen security personnel

In Naxal-affected Bijapur in Chhattisgarh, the Naxals on Saturday surrounded and attacked more than 700 jawans. The Bijapur SP said 22 jawans were killed and several others were missing in the clashes with the Naxals. The Naxals have snatched their weapons from more than two dozen security personnel.

A search operation has been conducted since early Sunday morning to find the missing troopers and security forces found the bodies of 17 missing troopers from the spot. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel have expressed grief over the incident. Home Minister Shah had telephoned the Chief Minister to get information from him about the entire attack. CM Baghel has gone to Assam to campaign and will reach Chhattisgarh by Sunday evening.

Security forces were informed that the Naxals had set up camp in the hills of Jonaguda. This was followed on Friday night by the deployment of 2,000 personnel under the joint anti-Naxal operation of the Cobra Battalion, DRG and STF of the Central Reserve Police Force in Bijapur and Sukma districts. But on Saturday, the Naxals surrounded 700 jawans near Jonaguda hill in Tarram area and attacked them. The Naxals surrounded the jawans from 3 directions and started firing at them. Fifteen Naxalites were killed in the clash which lasted for about 3 hours. The attack killed 22 soldiers and treated more than 31 injured.
