Assam: Election Commission imposes 48-hour ban on Hemant Sarma's campaign, BJP to go to court

Dispur, Ta. 3. Saturday, April, 2021

The third phase of polling for 40 seats in Assam is scheduled for April 6. Earlier, the Election Commission on Friday imposed a 48-hour moratorium on the campaign of powerful BJP leader Hemant Biswa Sarma, against whom the BJP will now go to court.

BJP leader and Union Minister Anurag Thakur said, "We will knock on the door of the court. On the other hand, Sarma herself has appealed to the High Court against the Election Commission's order."

Hemant Sarma is considered one of the most powerful leaders of the BJP and is also referred to as Chanakya of Assam. The Election Commission has taken action against the Leader of the Opposition after Hemant Sarma's statement. We will send him to jail through the National Investigation Agency.

The Congress had lodged a complaint with the Election Commission over the statement as the BPF, the Bodoland People's Front, is currently contesting the elections along with the Congress.

The Election Commission has now issued a notice to Hemant Sarma to clarify the statement and also banned his campaign for 48 hours. After the Election Commission's action, the Congress said that the BJP was losing the election and was playing new tricks. The Election Commission should also impose a similar ban on the campaign of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.
