New Delhi, 4 April 2021 Sunday

Home Minister Amit Shah has convened a high-level security review meeting in the wake of the Chhattisgarh Naxal attack. Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, IB Director Arvind Kumar and senior CRPF officials were also present at the meeting. The meeting was held at the residence of Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the Bijapur encounter incident. It may be mentioned here that in view of the martyrdom of 22 security personnel in an encounter with the Naxalites, the Union Home Minister has returned to Delhi on Sunday, halting his campaign tour in Assam.

The home minister was on a one-day visit to Assam and was scheduled to address three election rallies in Sarbhog, Bhawanipur and Jalukbadi constituencies for BJP and its allies. The third and final phase of polling in Assam is on April 6. The first two phases of polling in the state have been completed on March 27 and April 1. An official said Shah addressed the gathering at Sarbhog, but canceled his meetings at two other places and returned to Delhi.

On Saturday, five security personnel were killed and 30 others injured in an encounter with the Naxals in a forest on the border of Bijapur and Sukma districts of Chhattisgarh. Police said the bodies of 17 of the 18 soldiers who went missing after the encounter on Sunday were found, bringing the total number of soldiers killed in the encounter to 22.

A Home Ministry official had earlier said that Shah had spoken to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Badhel and was briefed on the situation after the encounter.
