Former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha on Saturday joined Mamata Banerjee's party Trinamool Congress. He went to the TMC office in Kolkata and joined the party. Yashwant Sinha has decided to join the TMC ahead of the West Bengal elections. Yashwant Sinha, a former finance minister in Atal Bihar Vajpayee's government, has emerged as one of the critics of the Modi government since 2014.

Sinha is likely to campaign in West Bengal after joining the TMC. Yashwant Sinha has repeatedly criticized the Modi government on economic issues. He also criticized the party leadership several times during his son Jayant Sinha's tenure as state finance minister from 2014 to 2019.

Voting will be held in 8 phases for 294 assembly seats in West Bengal. The first phase of polling will be held on March 27. This will be followed by a second round of voting on April 1.
