Why does the government shut down the internet in situations like stress and emergencies? While such a question is usually asked to everyone, the government in the Rajya Sabha today clarified why the government shuts down the internet in the midst of riots and tensions.

Authorities shut down the Internet to maintain law and order in emergencies during tensions and riots, the government said on Wednesday. Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy has given this information in response to a question.

He said that many challenges are being posed by cyberspace due to its pervasive and unlimited character. Information in cyberspace moves very fast and there is a risk of its misuse.

He said the state and union territories would shut down telecommunications services and the internet in order to maintain public safety and avoid emergencies during a tense situation. This comes under the Procedure for Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services (Amendment) Rules, 2020 Centralized statistics are not kept by his ministry about shutting down the internet.
