China seeks to put pressure on Taiwan by curbing pineapple trade: Chinese newspaper South China Morning

BEIJING / TAIPEI: Over the past few days, China and Taiwan have been at loggerheads over pineapple imports, and a social media campaign called Freedom Pineapple has been launched. It is said that China has stopped importing Taiwanese pineapple, saying it is contaminated.

Taiwan claims that there is no disturbance in our pineapple, but China wants to patch up our trade, so it has taken such a step. A Freedom Pineapple campaign has been launched from Taiwan against China's move. Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has also joined the campaign and tweeted more than once.

The people of Taiwan say that this is China's move to break our pineapple trade. It is well known that China has wanted to occupy small Taiwan for years. But Taiwan does not flinch. Taiwan produces 20,000 tons of pineapple every year. 10 per cent of it is exported. China is a big buyer of Taiwanese pineapples. But last month China stopped buying.

Now Taiwan has to say what happened if China doesn't buy, we have found other customers and started exporting there as well. The Chinese newspaper South China Morning reported that China's original intention behind the ban was to put pressure on Taiwan. If China stops buying, pineapple prices in Taiwan will fall and farmers there will suffer.

To prevent this from happening, a social media campaign was launched in Taiwan, with the participation of Taiwanese government ministers. He was also supported by the US and Canadian embassies. So this campaign has become a multinational not living between the two countries. As a result of Taiwan's campaign, an order of 5,000 tons was given to Japan.
