Imran Khan's cabinet has taken an important decision regarding trade between India and Pakistan. The Cabinet on Economic Affairs has approved trade with India. At the same time, by June 2021, Pakistan will start importing cotton from India again. In addition, Pakistan may soon take a decision on sugar and allow imports.

Request for Economic Coordination

The Economic Coordination Committee of Pakistan's cabinet released a report on Wednesday. The report called for resumption of cotton and sugar trade with India. Following the approval of the committee's report, Pakistan is set to officially start trading with India.

Trade closed for 19 months

The reason for the resentment in the relations between India and Pakistan is public. Pakistan was outraged by the repeal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019 and cut off trade with India. India also imposed a 200 per cent duty on all items coming from Pakistan after the Pulwama attack. As a result, trade between the two countries almost came to a standstill. Pakistan is having a hard time getting sugar and cotton so it has to be prepared for imports.

Earlier, in May 2020, Pakistan lifted the ban on drugs and raw materials imported from India. Pakistan took the decision in view of the Koro epidemic so that the region would not face shortage of medicines and other health related items.
