The apex court had so far expressed displeasure over why CCTV cameras were not installed in the offices of central investigative agencies like CBI, NIA and ED. He also lashed out at the government for trying to pull back on the issue.

The court directed the central government to install CCTV cameras and recording devices in all police stations in the country in the next five months. The Center has also been asked to file an affidavit within 3 weeks and the state governments within a month.

The affidavit also states the cost of installing CCTV cameras and the timeline for complying with court directions. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the central government in a bench headed by Justice RF Nariman, said this was an issue related to the fundamental rights of citizens.

The order to install CCTV cameras in the police stations of the states where elections are held has been given sufficient leeway at present.
