Fugitive Indian Mujahideen's terror plea found guilty in Batla House encounter, sentence to be announced on this date

Delhi's Saket court has convicted Arij Khan, a terrorist involved in the 2008 Batla House encounter case. According to the court, the prosecution has succeeded in proving that Arij alias Junaid was present at the spot. The court has fixed March 15 to decide on the sentence of the convict.

The court convicted Arij Khan on other charges including murder, attempted murder, assault on a government employee, obstruction of a government employee's job, seriously injuring a government official, and the Arms Act.

The court directed the investigating officers to inform the Special Cell of Delhi Police about the family, social and economic condition of the martyred Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma and the two injured police personnel. Compensation to the victim's family will be considered on that basis, the court said.

In the 2008 Batla House encounter, Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, posted in the Special Cell of Delhi Police, was shot dead by militants and two other police personnel were injured.

Mohan Chand Sharma, 44, was shot three times on September 19, 2008 while apprehending five suspected terrorists hiding at Batla House in South Delhi and later died during treatment.

Earlier, terrorist Shehzad Ahmed was convicted in the case in 2013. The two managed to escape during the Batla House encounter while the remaining 3 were killed in the police encounter.

Who is Arij Khan?

Arij Khan is the mastermind behind the 2008 blasts in Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and UP courts. The blasts killed 165 people and injured 535 others. Arij Khan had a bounty of Rs 15 lakh on his head at the time and Interpol had issued a Red Corner Notice against him. Arij, a resident of Azamgarh, was arrested in February 2018 by a special cell team.
