Peasant leaders who considered themselves apolitical have now openly entered the arena of politics. Even though these leaders are not contesting the elections, there is a need for campaigning in the political arena of Bengal and appealing to the people to vote against the BJP. According to the farmers' leaders, the government's arrogance should be broken by boycotting the BJP.

Appeal not to vote for BJP

The United Farmers Front (SKM), an organization of various farmers' unions, on Friday urged farmers and others in West Bengal not to vote for the BJP in the forthcoming Assembly elections. According to the United Farmers Front, the defeat in the elections will force the BJP-led government at the Center to withdraw all three new agricultural laws. SKM leader Yogendra Yadav said, "We are not endorsing any party or telling people who to vote for but our only request is that the BJP be taught a lesson."

Tikait's rally

Arriving in Bengal, the farmer leader will reach out to the people through his messengers in 294 assembly constituencies and travel by tractor. Indian Farmers Union leader Rakesh Tikait will address mahapanchayats and rallies in Kolkata and Nandigram on Saturday urging people to vote against the BJP.

Focus only on Bengal

Bengal has now become the new address of peasant leaders. Assembly elections are currently being held in five states but peasant leaders are focusing on Bengal where the BJP seems to be giving a strong blow to the TMC. In these circumstances, it is a question of why the farmer leaders are not going to other states, when there is so much farming in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Assam.
