Failure to recall a bad vehicle will result in a fine of up to Rs 1 crore, new rules will apply to these vehicles

According to a statement from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, companies will have to pay a fine of up to Rs 1 crore if the government orders the recall of vehicles due to production defects. This arrangement will be effective from April 1, 2021. The ministry has issued rules for manufacturers to recall vehicles for defects.

According to the ministry, in case of a special category of vehicle, if more than one minimum number of complaints are received before the total sales on the vehicle recall portal, the law of compulsory recall of the vehicle will be applied to the manufacturer for repairing those vehicles.

A fine of up to Rs 1 crore

According to the new notification, the amount of fine will range from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 1 crore depending on the number of vehicles and their type. Under the Central Motor Vehicle Act, there is a provision of penalty in the rule of testing and compulsory recall of vehicles. This penalty applies when the manufacturer or importer fails to order the vehicle voluntarily. So far no penalty has been imposed in this case.

This rule will apply to vehicles

The new rule will apply to vehicles that are less than 7 years old. It will be considered a defect in the vehicle or spare part or software that is a risk to road safety.

Will become a complaint portal for customers

The government intends to create a portal for vehicle owners so that they can lodge their complaints. Based on the complaint, a notice will be sent to the auto companies which will have to reply within 30 days. The government is very serious about road safety. Work is underway on a plan to reduce the number of deaths in road accidents by 50 per cent and this step has been taken only after its investigation.
