New delhi date. Saturday, March 13, 2021

From January 1, 2022, single use plastics will be banned across the country. Not only that, the use of plastic bags up to 120 microns in thickness and nonwoven bags up to 240 microns in thickness will also be discontinued. The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has drafted a notification in this regard keeping in view the adverse effects of plastic waste. The draft has been brought into the public domain for 60 days from Thursday to know people's concerns and suggestions. Its gazette notification will then be made public.

Last February, the Prime Minister's Office held a meeting to limit the use of plastics. At that meeting, it was decided that the use of items made of microplastics will be completely stopped by January 2022. Prior to that, the only rule was to ban plastic bags and items up to 50 microns. These new rules, which will be applied uniformly across the country, will be known as the Plastic Waste Management (Research) Rules, 2021.

DPCC's tough stance

In Delhi, Special Secretary of the Environment Department K.S. Jaichandra has also issued orders in the name of Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and Delhi Park and Garden Society to ban single use plastics.

1.6 million tons of plastic waste annually

According to a survey report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the country produces 1.6 million tonnes of plastic waste annually. In Delhi, the figure is around 800 tonnes per annum.

Include these items in the list

Disposable crockery, packed glass of drinking water, thermocol and all decorations made of plastic, plastic bags, plastic pouches with 50 mm or 50 g luggage, balloons, flags, tetrapack pipes, plastic sheets for packing, plastic pads up to 500 mm.

Destruction does not occur for many years

Environmental experts report that non-corrosive plastics contaminate groundwater. Plastic bottles and items made of disposable plastic do not perish even after 450 years. It takes 400 years for a plastic lid to be completely destroyed while a plastic fishing net takes 650 years.
