An application has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking strict guidelines and rules by the central government to stop the sale and distribution of counterfeit Covid-19 vaccine in the market.

The PIL has been filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari. He requested the apex court to direct the Center to enact strict laws to curb criminal activities like sale or distribution of counterfeit vaccines by any organization, company or individual.

The petition called for the creation of guidelines under disaster management or other legislation. These guidelines are determined by a high-powered committee chaired and monitored by a retired Supreme Court judge.

The petition said the government should launch an awareness campaign for the safety of citizens against the risk of fake vaccination against the corona virus. At the same time, it should be ensured that the public gets cheap and adequate amount of vaccine.

According to the petition, Interpol has issued a global alert to law enforcement agencies in its 194 member countries. It called for an organized criminal network to target the Covid-19 vaccine, both physically and online.

India is a huge country and has a very large population. Under these circumstances it could be a big market for criminal organizations and companies to make a profit by selling fake vaccines.
