54.90% turnout in West Bengal by 1:30 pm, TMC delegation visits Election Commission

- Long lines for polling were seen in both the states from 7 am onwards

The first phase of polling for the Assembly elections is taking place today in two important states of the country. It is coming against the news of record-breaking voting. The number of first phase voters in both the states is more than 1.54 crore. In Bengal, voting is taking place for 30 seats in 5 districts in the first phase out of a total of 8. While in Assam, voting is taking place for 47 seats. Long lines for polling were seen in both the states from 7 am onwards.

Voters staged a demonstration outside a polling station in the Kanthi South constituency of East Medinipur following a malfunction in EVM machines. Protesters at Majna jammed traffic outside the polling station and complained to another party that the vote was going. A Central Force force was deployed at the spot to bring the situation under control.

The turnout in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections was 54.90 per cent by 1:30 pm. In Assam, the turnout was 37.06 per cent by 1:00 pm. In the first phase of Assembly elections in West Bengal, more than 73 lakh voters in 30 seats will decide the fate of 191 candidates.

Incident of firing in West Bengal

In West Bengal, the firing came just in time for the elections. Two security personnel were injured in the firing in eastern Madinapur. Besides, BJP workers have been accused of breaking into booths. Violent incidents erupted just hours after polling began and injured security personnel were moved for treatment. It was learned that the shooting took place at Satsataman polling booth in Bhagwanpur assembly constituency.

TMC delegation meets with EC

A delegation of TMC leaders called on the Chief Electoral Officer at Kolkata. According to TMC leader Sudip Bandopadhyay, the booth agent had requested to change the appointment system. The agent is a voter of the respective booth and sought approval from anyone at any booth. Stating that the new system was not acceptable, the TMC leader demanded that from the next stage, the booth agent should be a local person at the polling station.
