New delhi date. 13 February 2021, Saturday

World Radio Day is celebrated every year on 13th February. There was a time when radio was very important in our lives. Radio was used as an important means of entertainment through information and communication, songs, but with the advent of television and mobiles, the importance of radio has not diminished even today.

Radio has played an important role in exchanging information and educating people around the world. Its use engages young people in discussions of topics that affect them. It helped save lives during natural and man-made disasters. Radio was a platform for journalists to get their report out to the world.

Radio is still the most powerful but affordable medium today. Although radio has become a centuries-old medium, it is still used for communication. It was first broadcast on United Nations Radio on this day in 1945. Given the importance of radio, Radio Day is celebrated every year. Formally the first radio day was celebrated in the year 2012.

It was first proposed by the Spanish Radio Academy in 2010. World Radio Day was declared on February 13, 2011 at the 36th session of the UNESCO General Assembly. The declaration of UNESCO as World Radio Day on 13 February was approved by the United Nations General Assembly on 14 January 2013.

Every year UNESCO hosts a number of programs on Radio Day in collaboration with broadcasters, organizations and communities around the world. On this day, there is a healthy discussion about the importance of radio as a medium of communication and awareness is spread. The theme of World Radio Day 2020 is 'Radio and Diversity'.
