Uttarakhand floods: Scientists warn 8 months ago, find out about study report

New Delhi, 7 February 2021 Sunday

Glacier rupture in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand has caused waterlogging, relief and rescue operations from the state to the central government are underway, teams of NDRF, ITBP and Air Force are working continuously, 100-150 people are feared to have died in the disaster. It is worth mentioning here that the scientists had warned about this kind of natural calamity about 8 months ago, if this had been done at that time, this calamity could have been avoided.

Scientists at the Wadia Geological Survey in Dehradun were warned in June-July last year by a study to stop the flow of rivers through glaciers in the entire Himalayan region, including Karakoram in Jammu and Kashmir, and the danger of its and its lakes.

In 2019, scientists released a report on the use of glaciers to stop the flow of rivers from glaciers in the area. The study found that almost all glaciers in the Himalayan region were melting.

The study was conducted by Drs. Rakesh Bhambri, Dr. Amit Kumar, Dr. Akshay Verma and Dr. Prepared by Sameer Tiwari, the scientists' study report was published in the international journal Global and Planetary Change, and world-renowned geographer Prof Kenneth Hewitt also contributed to the study report.
