The floods in Chamoli, Uttarakhand have claimed many lives and more than 100 people are still missing. About 170 people are believed to have been trapped in the mine at Tapovan and the exact cause of the disaster has not yet been determined. While a team of scientists has arrived at the scene and is trying to find the cause, locals suspect that the 1965 expedition was responsible for the tragedy in which American plutonium devices were buried in the mountain tops.

What happened in 1965?

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee also expressed concern over the device being installed near Nanda Devi. He was India's foreign minister at the time and said he did not believe in the theory that there was no danger from such a device. According to details of the incident, two plutonium devices were installed at Nanda Devi to monitor China's nuclear campaign. However, a few days after planting, both devices were lost in an avalanche. The device was installed with the consent of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi.

The US intelligence agency had planned to install the device in Mount Nandadevi to monitor China's activities. But after being trapped in a blizzard, mountaineers were forced to stop midway through the expedition and return to save lives by leaving the device on the mountain. The second year the team went to the mountain again but could not trace the device, which also contained seven plutonium capsules in a special container for carrying nuclear fuel.

Fear among locals

Plutonium radiation is responsible for the tragedy, according to concerns expressed by local villagers. According to a report gathered from the locals of Rani Ganga on Sunday when the glacier broke and fell into the Rishiganga river from Nandadevi mountain and flooded, he felt a pungent smell. According to a local, the smell made it difficult to breathe for a while. Locals called on the government to rediscover the device and also analyzed it as being responsible somewhere behind the glacier eruption.

According to Captain Kohli, who has served in the Indian Navy, the device may have been stuck in a glacier and lying idle. This device cannot be activated by itself. The device needs all its components to work together in order to be active. At the same time, however, he acknowledged that the device could cause nuclear pollution in the Ganges and its tributaries.
