Supreme Court rocks Indian Navy's decent warship INS Virat

The Supreme Court has stayed the demolition of the Navy's retired Ekcroft carrier ship INS Virat. A company called Envitech Marine Consultants Limited paid Rs 100 crore to protect the ship as a museum.

It may be mentioned that INS Virat was bought by Shriram Group of Bhavnagar. It was supposed to be demolished for scrap in Alang but there was a lot of controversy over the demand to develop it as a museum which has now reached the Supreme Court. Currently, the Supreme Court has stayed the demolition of INS Virat.

INS Virat was purchased by India from the British Royal Navy in 1987. At the time, Virat's name was HMS Hermes and he had spent 25 years in the British Navy. INS Virat played an important role in the Falklands War against Argentina. Virat's name is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most service.
