Social media site double standards don't work, catastrophic content has to be removed within 24 hours

The ongoing clash between the central government and social media sites like Twitter also echoed the guidelines released by the central government today.

Announcing the new guidelines for social media and OTT platforms, Union Ministers Prakash Javadekar and Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "Social media companies are welcome to do business in India. We do not mind if they make money by doing business in India. We do not disagree with government policies." The government also respects the right but it is imperative that users be given a platform to raise questions about the ongoing misuse of social media. We have received a number of complaints that images are being tampered with and shared on social media as well as its use. The case of misuse of social media has reached from civil society to Parliament and the Supreme Court.

"Social media is welcome, but there should be no double standards on social media," he said. Shows norms which are not acceptable under any circumstances.

Ravi Shankar Prasad and Javadekar said that according to the new guideline, if there is a complaint about catastrophic content on social media, it has to be removed within 24 hours. At the same time, digital media has to do self-regulation like electronic media.
