Biden talks with Jinping for first time since becoming president, raises Hong Kong issue

For the first time since becoming US president, Joe Biden has spoken on the phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Before the start of the New Year celebrations in China, Biden called Xi Jinping and said that China should refrain from cracking down on those who support democracy in Hong Kong. When the American people are going to benefit from it.

The White House said in a statement that President Biden had spoken with the Chinese president about Beijing's inappropriate economic policy, the ongoing crackdown on the people of Hong Kong and the ongoing human rights abuses in China's Xinjiang province.

Meanwhile, Chinese state media reported that Jinping had warned Biden that bad relations between the United States and China could lead to a "terrible situation" for both countries. He hoped the new US administration would improve relations between the two countries.

Baiden's talks with Jinping just before the Chinese New Year are being seen as an initiative to improve relations between the two countries.
