The new Congress president will be elected in May

-Decision taken at the Congress executive meeting

-Rahul left the presidency after the 2019 elections

New Delhi 22nd January 2021 Friday

The decision to elect a new Congress president in May this year was taken at a meeting of the party's executive today.

Rahul Gandhi, the then party president, resigned as party president after the Congress was rocked in the 2019 parliamentary elections. Despite her ill health at the time, Sonia Gandhi accepted the responsibility of acting chairperson at the insistence of the party.

Even after that, the Congress was in a constant state of turmoil in various state elections. Last year, 23 members, led by MP Shashi Tharoor, wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi demanding the election of a permanent chairperson and internal party elections.

The meeting convened by Sonia Gandhi was followed by many upheavals. At one stage, Rahul Gandhi called Ghulam Nabi Azad pro-BJP and Ghulam Nabi Azad got angry. Sonia Gandhi called him to reassure him of his displeasure. But then Kapil Sibal, Shashi Tharoor, Ghulam Nabi Azad etc. were not given important tasks.

These leaders also understood that fact. Recently, Kapil Sibal wrote another letter in which he expressed his displeasure. Kapil Sibal wrote that he had promised that a decision would be taken soon on the issue of election of a permanent party president and an internal election of the party to become the acting chairman but that promise was not fulfilled. How long will this and that last?

The party's executive committee met today, Friday, January 22. In this meeting, Sonia Gandhi had earlier lashed out at the Modi government. Regarding the farmers' movement, Sonia Gandhi said that the Modi government was too hasty in enacting new agricultural laws. The Congress was the first to say that these laws were not in the interest of the farmers.

At the same meeting, it was announced that the election of a new party president would be held in May.
