Mount Merapi, which has been erupting for the last twenty-two days, erupted on Wednesday night with a huge eruption. A fiery lava flow was flowing down the mountain.

The blast was heard several kilometers away. People were horrified by the blast. Then flames, ashes and gas were thrown into the air. However, no casualties or damage to property were reported.

The eruption was reported at a height of 2,968 meters (9,737 feet) in Yogyakarta province, bordering Central Java in Indonesia. The fiery mantle from the top of the mountain was rushing towards the foothills with tremendous speed.

Hanik Humaida, a woman chairperson of the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center in Yogyakarta, said there had never been so many blankets on record. There was a lot of mantle. We have never seen before that there is no mention in the records of the history of the country that so many mantles have flown.

The risk was increased due to this volcano. Ash hills began to crumble in many of the surrounding villages. Toxic gas was also spreading. People from at least 150 villages were forced to evacuate.

"We have warned people to stay away from the volcano," he said, adding that the volcano was overcrowded and thousands of people had been displaced. Earlier in 2010, the same volcano erupted, killing about 350 people. This time, no such figures have been found yet.
