India should respect people's right to peaceful demonstrations, UN statement on farmer violence

New York, Ta. 27 January 2021, Wednesday

The violence during the tractor rally in Delhi is now being discussed all over the world. The United Nations has also advised India not to interfere in the matter.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's spokesman Stephen Dujarric said in a statement that the Indian government should respect peaceful demonstrations, non-violence and the freedom of assembly.

Asked about the protests in India, he said, "People have the right to protest peacefully and the government should respect that right." There are some comments about Indian farmers that are likely to provoke the public. Such comments are not appropriate and especially those related to the internal affairs of a democratic country are not appropriate.
