Guwahati / New Delhi 23rd January 2021 Saturday

On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's inauguration of a scheme for the benefit of the people of Assam and Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Assam, the All Assam Students Union (ASU) staged a torch procession in protest of the new Citizenship Act (CAA).

Asu clashed with the police in an attempt to stop the torch procession in the Tezpur area of Assam, injuring one person. Asu's advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya and Asu's chairman Dipank Kumar Nath had a heated argument with the police. Police told him to hand over the torch to police. Then let me move on.

"The torch was part of our protest so we refused to hand it over to the police," Bhattacharya said. The police argued that if someone threw a torch anywhere in a commotion, the fire could have started and the atmosphere could have exploded. Bhattacharya slammed Chief Minister Sarvanand Sonowal's efforts to crush the silent protest rally. It is pertinent to note here that when Bhattacharya was the General Secretary of Asu, the present Chief Minister Sonowal was the Chairman of Asu.

Bhattacharya said that Sonowal had reached the Chief Minister's chair from Swahid Bhavan (Asuna's headquarters). Now he wants to crush the silent protest of tears. We marched peacefully. However, those who joined the torch procession chanted anti-Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and state Chief Minister Sonowal.

It may be recalled that today, Saturday, January 23, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Assam government's program to donate a piece of land to more than one lakh landless people in Shivsagar district of Assam. Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Assam on Sunday. Meanwhile, Asu members protested against the CAA by holding a torch procession.

The natives of Assam allege that as the population of Bangladeshi infiltrators increased, the natives of Assam were reduced to a minority and their rights were violated. This fight has been going on for the last two and a half decades. The population of Bangladeshi infiltrators in Assam has been steadily increasing since the time of Congress leader Sadgat Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed.
