A woman was gang-raped on January 3 in Badaun, Uttarakhand, after she was stabbed in the genitals and beaten to death, sparking a sensation in the area.

However, two suspects believed to be involved in the incident were nabbed while a third was having breakfast, a police spokesperson said. According to the postmortem report, the woman was struck in the left rib, left lung and left leg with a very heavy object. The woman died of excessive bleeding.

The officer-in-charge of Ughaiti police station in Badaun has been suspended, a senior police official said. The National Security Act was applied against the arrested accused.

The details of the incident are that a woman from Ughaiti village went to the temple on Sunday, January 3, as usual. The woman was raped by her disciples in addition to the temple mahant. Then another man also raped the woman. He was then beaten and the woman was killed for fear of being identified. The abbot and his disciple Bolero then dumped the woman's body near her house in a car. Police arrested the temple mahant and his disciples on the complaint of the woman's family members. Another accused was having breakfast when four police teams were deployed to nab him.

The woman's family members had lodged a complaint against the mahant and his followers at the Ughaiti police station but the concerned officer of the police station, Ravendra Pratap Singh, did not heed the complaint. Ravindra Pratap Singh was suspended by a senior officer. Three doctors, including a woman, performed the woman's postmortem.
