In Madhya Pradesh, those who mix in medicines and food items will no longer be able to survive. The Madhya Pradesh cabinet has approved an ordinance to give life imprisonment to anyone found guilty of adulteration of drugs and food items.

A new clause has been added to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to impose a five-year sentence and a fine of Rs one lakh on food vendors even after the expiry date.

According to Madhya Pradesh Public Relations Department officials, the Penal Laws (Madhya Pradesh Amendment) Ordinance, 2020 was approved in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

The bill was to be introduced in the winter session of the Legislative Assembly starting December 28, but the ordinance has been approved as the winter session has been postponed due to coronation.

After approving the ordinance, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said those involved in drug and food adulteration in the state would not be prosecuted at any cost.
